Severn River Cottages in winter

Winter is our favourite time of the year as we love the cold weather! It’s also our most popular season thanks to Stanthorpe’s fame as Queensland’s coldest town. Before your stay with us, here’s what you can expect from Severn River Cottages in winter.

The weather

It’s an obvious place to start, but during winter you’ll experience chilly nights and frosty mornings. The sky is often clear, resulting in golden sunrise and sunsets, misty mornings, and crystal clear night skies.

Average temperatures during winter are 15°C during the day and 2°C at night, although the mercury dropping to -3°C is not uncommon.

Down by Frog Hollow Cottage it’s often  frostier and a couple of degrees colder due to its proximity to the Severn River. As you walk from Orchard Cottage at the top of the property down towards the river, there’s what feels like a curtain of colder air that you pass through!

There is always a chance of snow each year as the temperatures are certainly cold enough for it. We’ve got our fingers crossed for snow this year!

The critters

We have a wide range of critters who call Severn River Cottages their home.

By Orchard Cottage, we have a pair of tawny frogmouths who like to sit on a north-facing branch during winter. It’s the sunniest place to be, and it helps them keep warm during colder temperatures.

During the chilly mornings you may also see kangaroos, wallabies, or wallaroos hanging around the property. They’re pretty keen on hanging around Frog Hollow Cottage!

Despite the cold season, there’s plenty of birds who stay here all year long. These include apostlebirds, grey-crowned babblers, rosellas, welcome swallows, and honeyeaters. No matter the time of year, it’s great to birdwatch in the Granite Belt.

Things to do in winter

Winter is a magical time to visit the Stanthorpe area. It’s cold enough to snuggle up by an outdoor firepit, gazing at the stars. Or if you’re not brave enough to face the freezing temperatures, you can enjoy a glass of local wine by the indoor fireplace!

As for events, Snowflakes in Stanthorpe transforms the town into a winter wonderland. Many of the local wineries and breweries will host their own wintery-themed events, including Christmas in July or sunset soirees.

Next time you’re in the Stanthorpe area, book your stay at Severn River Cottages! We have three private cottages to relax and unwind in after a busy day of exploring.
