Stanthorpe weather and seasons

Stanthorpe is known for being the coldest place in Queensland – it holds the lowest recorded temperature in the state with -10.6°C. People flock from coastal Queensland to catch a glimpse of snowfall.

Winter chills (1°C – 17°C)

Talk of snow is (ironically) the hot topic during winter, as Stanthorpe is one of the few places where it may snow in Queensland. The coldest month to visit Stanthorpe is July, where mean minimum temperatures reach 1.1°C.

Does it always snow in Stanthorpe? Unfortunately, snow is never guaranteed. However, overnight frost is common if you’re looking to experience the winter chill. The last significant Stanthorpe snow event was back in July 2015. Dalveen and Applethorpe managed to see snow fall during the afternoon on 2 August 2025, but it wasn’t enough snow to settle unfortnately.

Winter is also known as “brass monkey season” in the area – meaning “it’s cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey”!

Cosying up by the fire with a glass of local wine is a classic evening activity in the Granite Belt. If you’re looking for a Stanthorpe accommodation with a fireplace, look no further than Severn River Cottages. We provide firewood for both the outdoor fire pit (if you fancy gazing up at the stars!) and the indoor fireplace.

Bloomin’ spring (5°C – 25°C)

Spring bursts with activity after the cool winter. October marks the start of strawberry picking season, and mulberry trees come alive with fruit. The local Stanthorpe Berry Festival in November celebrates the abundance of berries produced in the region.

Wildflowers start to appear, adorning the region in a yellow hue. Girraween National Park’s magnificent displays of colourful flowers start to bloom – very apt as the name Girraween means “place of flowers”.

Aloomba Lavendar farm also bursts into life as the lavender starts to flower. The best time of year to visit is late November and early December.

Fresh summer (12°C – 28°C)

Thanks to our higher elevation, the Granite Belt has a subtropical highland climate (resulting in cooler summers). Humidity is lower during this season compared to Queensland’s coastal regions, so visiting Stanthorpe in summer is ideal for those who can’t stand the heat!

The region is lush and green during this time. Stone fruit and berries are available at many pick-your-own farms.

With lower temperatures and humidity, it’s the perfect time to explore the outdoors. Go for a bush walk at our nearby national parks, go birdwatching, or float down the Severn River in your kayak. Severn River Cottages has three private cottages, ideally placed for plenty of outdoor activities in the Granite Belt.

Vibrant Autumn (9°C – 26°C)

Autumn brings harvest across the region, as apples and wine grapes are ripe for the picking.

The area is home to over one million apple trees, supplying the majority of Queensland with the fruit. The Big Apple landmark is north of Stanthorpe, near the popular Sutton’s apple juice factory and café.

Our famous cool-climate wine region vineyards start to bring in their grapes too. We have an Apple and Grape Harvest Festival every two years to celebrate the produce which made Stanthorpe famous.

The region turns brilliant crimson and gold in preparation for winter. Our Orchard Cottage is especially pleasing at this time of year!
