We’re lucky to have Stanthorpe strawberry farms right on our doorstep.
When does strawberry season start?
For most of Queensland, strawberry season is during the colder months of May – October.
However, for Stanthorpe in the Granite Belt region, strawberry season is reversed. October – May (when the days are warm and the nights cool) are when the berries are ripe for the picking. Because of this seasonal difference, the Granite Belt area is an important supplier to the rest of Queensland for strawberries in the summertime.
Pick your own strawberries
Come October, strawberry farms in Stanthorpe open their gates to the public to pick your own strawberries.
Eastern Colour farm near Applethorpe hold regular pick your own events throughout the season. Don’t miss out and book a slot when they next have an event.
Ashbern Farms just outside of Stanthorpe is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the summer months for strawberry picking. You can visit between 8am and 3pm to pick your own strawberries, enjoy some homemade strawberry ice cream, and browse for strawberry-related gifts. If you find a big berry, let the team know and you may be added to their Super-Size Strawberry Hall of Fame.
We took a trip to visit Ashburn towards the start of the season, and the strawberries were delicious – we will be back to enjoy more of their ice cream too!
Celebrating our produce
Stanthorpe is also home to the Stanthorpe Berry Festival, held in November.
Established in 2021, the festival celebrates our local produce with an abundance of market stalls, food, and activities for the whole family.
We attended the 2024 event and were blown away by some of the food on offer. Sadly, we missed the ominous berry diving, but it looked like a whole lot of messy fun!
