About The Severn River

The headwaters of the perennial Severn River flow lazily past the bottom of our property, near Frog Hollow Cottage.

A long journey

The river starts its very long journey in the Queensland town of Stanthorpe. Quart Pot Creek flows through Stanthorpe before its confluence with Spring Creek forms the Severn River.

As the river continues southwest, flowing through the Sundown National Park, it joins with the Dumaresq River. Here marks the border between Queensland and New South Wales.

Continuing its journey, the river will join the Macintyre River near Wallangra. Over the course of the journey south-west, the river will grow and meet other tributaries. Eventually, the water will empty into the ocean via the Murray River just to the south-east of Adelaide.

Due to the distance the river travels (it is part of the Murray-Darling basin catchment), the Severn River can be noted as an ultimate source of the Darling River.

Plants found at the river

You can find river red Gums, she-oaks, melaleucas, and bottlebrushes along the river. And at the Severn River Nature Reserve in northern New South Wales you can find the rare and endangered Severn River Heath-myrtle plant.

The Severn River, Stanthorpe

We’re blessed to have access to such a beautiful and tranquil river right on our property.

We encourage all guests staying in one of our standalone cottages to walk down the property and marvel at the river birds and creatures who call this place their home. Bring your binoculars to see the wide range of birds darting on the water for insects or soaring across the sky. And make sure to bring your kayak for a relaxing float down the gentle river!
