The Granite Belt region has an abundance of outdoor activities for both families and experienced hikers. With multiple national parks and bushwalking spots on your doorstep, you’re spoilt for choice! But for now, let’s shine a light on Donnelly’s Castle.
When you first hear about Donnelly’s Castle, you may think it’s a traditional castle nestled amongst the bush, but you’d be wrong! It’s a granite rock formation with huge rocks creating caves and crevices for you to shimmy through. Donnelly’s Castle is similar to Girraween National Park, but it’s more accessible to younger or less experienced hikers.
Donnelly’s Castle is located near Pozieres, just 25 minutes drive from Stanthorpe. There are a number of facilities available, including picnic areas, barbecues, car parking, and a public toilet. Plus, it’s dog friendly! The 8 hectares of land in the recreation reserve is named after Ned Donnelly, an early settler to the area.
The walking routes are easy, fun, and will have you scrambling over boulders or squeezing through gaps! It’s a great place to take little explorers. And if you climb to the top (just a short walk with steps and handrails), you’ll be rewarded with beautiful panoramic sights of the region.
